Milkman Glossary

Adaptive capacity engine

A hyper-automated process makes sure that the cost of delivery options is under control and never over-promise considering residual fleet capacity and historical density patterns

Appointment

A commitment explicitly agreed with the recipient

Availability at depot

The earliest time the system predicts for an order’s package set to become available for sorting operations at the last mile depot

Cluster

A subset of a territory‘s list of ZIP codes that can be accessed only by a subset of the mobile resources of the territory’s distribution waves.

Commitment

The time and date defined for an order into the system

Container

A container is a consolidation unit used for line-haul. It consolidates several packages into one line-haul shipment

Contract

Contract that defines a standard service level

Coverage

It is a list of zip codes where the organization may provide a service

Cross dock

Process of sorting inbound packages for outbound

Dedicated subcontractor

The organization that owns and operates a network of physical assets, resources and staff to provide multiple transportation services exclusively managed by the carrier

Depot app

App used by depot workers in order to perform sorting operations

Depot coverage

It is a subset of coverage, served by one single depot

Depot subcontractor

The organizion in charge of depot services

Detected time in, Detected time out

Detected time in: an event triggered by the driver app when the driver enters a circle around the planned point of service.
Detected time out: an event triggered by the driver app when the driver leaves a circle around the planned point of service.

Dispatching

It is the distribution of a route plan throughout the supply chain, in particular to the destination depot and the last mile fleet

Distribution waves

It is a pool of mobile resources and their work shifts, either as a single day or as recurring rule

Driver app

The mobile app used to dispatch the planned routes to each driver and to support/track their execution

Drop off - formerly known as delivery

Order type that indicates a delivery service of a package set that has been picked up at the last-mile depot.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA)

The time the system predicts for the planned service to start

External network

It is a network of third party carriers with whom the shipper or the carrier co-operates

Fleet manager

The person in charge of the management of the fleet’s drivers

Line haul

A transit line between two depots of your network

Milkman order code

A unique identifier of an order generated by the Milkman platform

Milkman package code

A unique identifier of a single package generated by the Milkman platform.

Milkman route planner

Milkman routing and scheduling optimization and planning algorithms

Mobile resource

A vehicle and driver that can be planned for services

Non-dedicated subcontractor

The organization that owns and operates a network of physical assets, resources and staff to provide multiple transportation services managed non exclusively by the carrier

Order

It is the request of a shipper to ship a package set to a recipient

Organization account

The organization that performs the last mile orchestration

Package-cutoff

It’s a wave attribute that defines the latest time for an order’s package to be scanned at the destination depot to consider such order eligible for planning such wave

Pick up - formerly known as collect

Order type that indicates a collection service of a package set that will be delivered at the last-mile depot.

Predictive density engine

An AI set of algorithms to generate the best range of service options on a order-by-order basis, predicted upon density

Recipient-cutoff

It’s a wave attribute that defines the latest time for a recipient to benefit of a service planned for such wave

Reported time in, Reported time out

Time in and out as reported by the driver via driver app interaction

Revised commitment

The increasingly accurate prediction of the ETA

Service attempt

A new attempt will be planned automatically by the platform, in case previous attempts to serve the same order have failed. The max number number of attempts is defined in the shipper settings

Service level

A list of priced service options defined on a territory bases

Shipper order code

A unique identifier of an order generated by the shipper

Shipper package code

A unique identifier of a single package generated by the shipper.

Shipper's contract

A particular service level agreed with the shipper

Shipper's warehouse

One of the warehouses of a shipper.

Stock location

A location inside a depot equipped with a label where you can temporarily store some packages

Smart appointments

It’s a module comprised of adaptive capacity engine and predictive density engine

Special areas

User defined polygons that represend areas with custom access rules or traffic limitations

Stock location

A location inside a depot equipped with a label where you can temporarily store some packages

Sub-territory

A subset of a territory’s list of ZIP codes with its own service levels

Subcontractor

The organization that owns and operates a network of physical assets, resources and staff to provide logistical or transportation services to the carrier

Territory

It is a subset of a depot coverage‘s list of ZIP codes. It is served by a set of distribution waves exclusively dedicated to such territory.

Territory planner

A decision support system that helps the user to create and update the service levels for different geographies as a function of the organization’s historical density
